Chemlab – 05.18.10 – Rock & Roll Hotel

I finally sobered up enough to write a coherent review of Tuesday nite’s MIDI GHETTO show at the Rock & Roll Hotel featuring Left Spine Down, 16 Volt, and headliners, Chemlab. this was my first time seeing a show at this venue. it might be just a bit smaller than the Black Cat. it’s a pretty good place to see a show, good atmosphere and acoustics.

Left Spine Down – cyberpunk act out of Vancouver (hometown of Skinny Puppy!) guitarist had on an ECW shirt. the guy playing keyboards has also played in KMFDM. the lead singer had a megaphone he sang in to, and also used to play police sirens. there were several instances where my friend got to sing with them. they covered Joy Division (She’s Lost Control) and Nirvana (Territorial Pissings) for an opening act, they were pretty good. I’m glad I took my friend’s advice, to check these guys out.

16 Volt – not familiar with these guys. the last song they played was something where the audience yelled out “fuck the record industry” during the chorus, or something to that effect. memo to any bands I may see in the future: put a hot chick on a shirt, and chances are, I’ll probably buy it.

Chemlab – a homecoming of sorts for DC natives, Chemlab. this was my first time seeing them, and I’m only familiar with their first album. the set was comprised mostly of older material and two new songs. Jared Louche is one of the wildest frontmen I’ve ever seen. he played grab-ass with the guitarist. he came out in to the audience several times, causing fans to get tangled up in the microphone cables. he almost brought down a projection screen that was hanging above the front of the stage. the best part was when he ran his hands thru my freshly cut hair, climbed up on an amp, and proceeded to deliver a knee upside my SKULL.

the lead singer of LSD had been imploring patrons in between songs, to buy him drinks. I took him up on his offer, and we did a few shots of Grey Goose, after the show. got a few pictures with him outside the venue. he also commented on my Skinny Puppy shirt. my friend saw Jared laying on the floor near the bar after the show.

“For someone who is totally sober, he is one of the least sober acting frontmen I’ve ever seen perform live!” – ClintJCL
