Beat Cops

starring Sam Seder (Home Movies) and H. Jon Benjamin (most notably, Master Shake, from the live action ATHF episode) comes Beat Cops. on a side note, Sam Seder reminds me of a younger version of my father, who reminds me of Larry David, who reminds me of George Costanza, who unfortunately, reminds me a lot of myself.

a show about two career desk cops who are assigned to walk the neighborhood patrol one day out of the year. that day, just so happens to be Christmas. maybe they did this for comedic effect, but there is no sign of holiday decorations anywhere to be seen. Benjamin’s character makes mention of this. of course, I didn’t expect them to shoot the episode on Christmas, but if they had at least shot it sometime around Christmas, it would’ve been more believeable. also, they have occasional run-ins with a postman, but they don’t deliver the mail on holidays, so yeah.

Seder’s character has a very George-type moment when he laments about the fact that he can’t use a toilet, unless he stakes it out for at least 6 months. going in, I thought this might be something like Reno 911, but it turned out to be more like Curb Your Enthusiasm, but not nearly as funny.

I kept hoping that they would get in to some wacky misadventures with some of the “locals” getting yelled at by a doorman, after asking him for directions. the doorman makes another appearance later in the episode as a sanitation worker, with a different accent, and wearing glasses and a fake moustache. a run-in with some bike cops. Benjamin’s character hits on a delivery woman. they spent a lot of time just walking around talking to each other about nothing. if nothing else, this show provided an excellent segue for me to ramble on and on about New York City.

this was a pilot originally shot in 2001, and then re-shot two years later for FOX, with the backing of Conan O’ Brien. there’s a tag line at the bottom of the screen that reads “Brilliant but Cancelled” sadly, this is only half correct, b/c this show is far from brilliant. there didn’t appear to be much of a premise to begin with, and maybe they only intended this as a one-and-done. Seder and Benjamin are both hilarious, but it wasn’t as funny as it could’ve been. I give it 2 out of 5…

I’d think J. Jon Benjamin would be more notably known as Ben from Dr. Katz, or Coach McGurk from Home Movies.

[…] * PILOT: Beat Cops – H. Jon Benjamin (Ben from Dr. Katz, Couch McGuirk from Home Movies, Bob from Bob’s Burgers, Archer from Archer) is hilarious. Sam Seder, of Home Movies and I’m With Busey also has potential. Unfortunately, this pilot just wasn’t nearly as funny as it could have been. Instead of having these two comical cops interfacing with the public, they mostly just talked to each other. It was a fail. 3/5 stars, 6/10. Generic pass.
