are you a professional wrassler currently working in the WWE? then, there’s a good chance you could be one of the chosen few, who may be deemed worthy enough to compete, in this year’s Royal Rumble match. as for the first time in history, the field in the Rumble expands from 30 to 40 wrasslers. wait, does WWE even have 40 guys on their roster. IT DOESN’T MATTER!!! they’ve got NXT, they’ve got the FCW developmental territory. I don’t think I’ve seen so many noobz debuting on WWE tv over a 6-month period, as the current youth movement, that’s going on right now. just this past Monday, that trend continued when FCW Heavyweight champion, Mason Ryan (aka Batista II) showed up at the end of RAW, to join CM Punk and Nexus.
the working theory as to why Vinman decided to expand the field, was b/c the Rumble has very little momentum with just two weeks before the show. It’s also being said that the 40 man format will allow creative to hide the fact that many talents on the roster are green, and eliminations can and most likely will happen a lot quicker with 40 men involved in the bout. As far as big name talent in the match, a 40 man Royal Rumble Match will allow them to eliminate more wrestlers and come off as stronger.
it seems as tho Triple H is a lock to return at the Rumble. not only that, but how about Awesome Kong making her debut at the Rumble?!? it’s nothing new to have a woman participate in the match (see Chyna in ’99 and ’00, and Beth Phoenix last year), and Kong definitely has the in-ring ability to hang with quite a few of her male counterparts. I think she will end up eliminating someone as well.
just because the field is expanding, doesn’t necessarily mean that the match will go any longer than it has in previous years. with 40 wrasslers to go thru, I suspect they will have them entering at 60-90 second intervals. there is going to be one wrassler who draws #1 or 2, that might not win it, but will be there when #40 makes their entrance. there have only been four men to last over an hour in a Rumble match, and this year, we’ll see a fifth. guys have won from the first two positions, but for my money, Ric Flair’s win from the #3 position in 1992, was the most impressive. Flair’s win was complemented perfectly by the back-and-forth commentary between the announce team of Gorilla Monsoon and Bobby Heenan. BEST ANNOUNCE DUO EVER!!!
as of press time, wikipedia is reporting that Booker T is gonna win the Rumble. now, can you dig that, SUCKA?!?
