Fred Armisen is the best thing about Saturday Night Live right now. so it should come as no surprise that when he and Carrie Brownstein (formerly of Sleater-Kinney), pitched the idea for a sketch comedy show to Lorne Michaels, it was greelit for production. Portlandia features Armisen and Brownstein playing a wide variety of characters, set against the backdrop of Portland, Oregon.
the pilot episode opens in Los Angeles, with Fred telling Carrie how much fun he had on his trip to Portland. he talks about the 90’s, and ppl getting piercings, and tribal tats. they talked about saving the planet, and forming bands. about how ppl were unambitious, slept til 11, and just wanted to hang out with their friends. it’s where young ppl go to retire. it’s like Gore won, and the Bush administration never happened.
“the dream of the 90’s is alive in Portland.”
guest stars include Steve Buscemi and Jason Sudeikis (in the pilot episode), Kyle McLachlan (as Portland’s mayor in episode “A Song For Portland’), and Aimee Mann and Sarah McLachlan (in episode “Aimee”)
the first season consists of six episodes set to run from Jan. 21 – Feb. 25. this show is worth a look if you’re a fan of Armisen and/or [adult swim] style humour. if u can’t dig the subtle humour of the show, u should be able to groove on the instantly catchy theme song. it’s nice that a network like IFC was willing to take a chance on a show like this, but it doesn’t make up for them pulling the plug on Food Party after just two seasons. u my girl, Thu Tran, one love!
I’ll be back with a more comprehensive score for Portlandia once the season concludes. but for now, I give it 3/5 on the netfilx scale, and 7/10 on the imdb scale…
