the Atlanta Thrashers are moving to Winnipeg. the sale of the team from Atlanta Spirit LLC to True North Sports and Entertainment still needs the approval of the Board of Governors on June 21, but all indications are that it’s a done deal. it’s been 15 long years, since the good folks of Winnipeg have had a team, when the Jets relocated to Phoenix, and became the Coyotes. since the league currently owns the Phoenix Coyotes, it shouldn’t be a problem for them to rename the new franchise, the Jets. Commissioner, Gary Bettman, is on record as saying they should’ve never left Winnipeg, in the first place. this is the second team in the modern-era to relocate from Atlanta. the first was the Calgary Flames in 1980.
the Winnipeg franchise will play in the Southeast Division in 2011-12, but there’s gonna hafta be some realignment done for 2012. my proposal:
Atlantic: New Jersey, NY Islanders, NY Rangers, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh
Northeast: Boston, Buffalo, Columbus (from Central), Montreal, Ottawa
Southeast: Carolina, Florida, Nashville (from Central), Tampa Bay, Washington
Central (renamed to Norris): Chicago, Detroit, Minnesota (from Northwest), St. Louis, Toronto (from Northeast)
Northwest: Calgary, Colorado, Edmonton, Vancouver, Winnipeg (from Southeast)
Pacific: Anaheim, Dallas, Los Angeles, Phoenix, San Jose
