Tomahawk “Oddfellows” Album Review 5/5

I should put a disclaimer on this review, by saying I am unabashedly, a Mike Patton fanboy. the man could get up on stage, fart into a microphone for 90 minutes, and I’d still pay good money to see him do it. Tomahawk is one of many side-projects Patton has worked with, and if I were to rank them, Tomahawk would come in at #3 (behind Mr. Bungle and Fantomas, respectively)

Tomahawk released their fourth studio album, Oddfellows, in January 2013, and I hafta say it is their best one, to date. surely, a contender for rock album of the year!

the first single off the album “Stone Letter” reminds me of a Live song (circa 1995) with a Marilyn Manson-esque riff thrown in for good measure. an average Mike Patton song is still better than 90% of the shit that’s out there.

if you are a fan of the aforementioned Mr. Bungle, then chances are you’ll love songs like “I.O.U.” “A Thousand Eyes” and most notably “Rise Up, Dirty Waters” which sound like they could’ve been recorded during the Disco Volante sessions. a possible reason for this is that Patton’s partner-in-crime, Trevor Dunn (who played with him in Mr. Bungle) replaced Kevin Rutmanis on bass.

“Typhoon”  is another excellent track, which sounds like a nod to the NWOBHM acts of the late 70s (in particular, Diamond Head)

“Baby, Let’s Play” is the song you wanna have on the stereo, for when you’re taking that special someone to the bone zone.

“The Quiet Few” is my favourite track on the album. I just love the way it starts out slow, and then gradually builds to this frenetic crescendo at the end. such an energetic song, I wonder why they didn’t play it on the recent tour. definitely would get the crowd moving.

this album is excellently paced with several instances where faster uptempo songs are followed by slower tunes, but it all meshes together so well. dare I say, this is the type of music Kurt Cobain would be writing,  if he were still alive today (see “South Paw” and “Choke Neck”) this album is a must-own for any Mike Patton fan!
