Soundgarden “King Animal” 3/5

when most mother fuckers were listening to bands like Pearl Jam and Nirvana, I preferred Soundgarden. I got my first taste of them with Badmotorfinger. songs like “Outshined” and “Rusty Cage” put them on the map, but “Jesus Christ Pose” was my jam! they got better with subsequent releases. Superunknown was their breakthrough commercial success. “Black Hole Sun” is a good song, but I wouldn’t even put in the top half, if I was ranking the songs on that album. “4th of July” “Limo Wreck” and “Head Down” would be my top 3. Down On The Upside, while not as big of a commercial success, as it’s predecessor, was still a critical success, and my favourite Soundgarden album to date. once again, the better songs on the album, were the less commercially-appealing ones like “Applebite” “An Unkind” and “Ty Cobb”

as the title of the lead track implies, Soundgarden has been away for too long. King Animal (released in November 2012) represents the band’s first new album in 16 years! the album starts out fairly strong, with each subsequent track getting better, culminating with the best song on the album “Bones of Birds” tracks 3-6 represent the best stretch. “By Crooked Steps” has that Badmotorfinger era vibe to it, and “A Thousand Days Before” features a catchy Middle Eastern type of riff. the second half of the album isn’t quite as good, but there are a few exceptions like “Worse Dreams” and “Eyelids Mouth” ultimately tho, the album didn’t excite me the way the previous two albums did (where I can basically listen to them front to back and not skip over a song) that’s not to say it isn’t good, just not great. I’m glad they made a comeback, as they remain on the short list of bands I would love to see in concert.
